Children and young people who have experienced trauma are often very poorly understood, they have been through adverse experiences, abuse or neglect and have a variety of needs including a mixture of trauma, attachment, mental health, neurodevelopment, educational and social needs. Grown ups who care for looked after children need to understand their often complex needs, developing a range of strategies to help a child manage their feelings and experiences.
I have provided intensive support for over 20 years to children and young people who are vulnerable and am passionate about helping parents, kinship and foster carers to understand the impact of trauma on their development and presentation as well as the complexity of their needs.
I offer 1to 1 consultation to empower foster parents to understand and support the child in front of them, reframing and recognising that all behaviour is communication guiding them with a range of trauma informed and therapeutic parenting strategies to help them to respond with awareness, attunement and sensitivity.
You can book a 1to1 consultation below, or get in touch if you're interested in our coaching packages.
Sometimes foster parents can feel overwhelmed in seeking the right kind of support in school for their child, children in care often need access to a range of adjustments, in school supports and access to other specialist support services in education to help them to navigate the demands of school life, achieve academically and to reach their potential - this is familiar territory for me and I'm happy to support you and your child in working with their school to improve educational outcomes. I can also provide training and support for schools and teachers to help them to better understand and meet the needs of our most vulnerable pupils.
I have over 20 years experience supporting children and young people experiencing significant and substantive Social, Emotional, Behavioural and Wellbeing difficulties, their families, support networks and schools. Children and young people who have experienced trauma often present with a range of complex needs and behaviours that require a level of support that can leave you as their caregiver feeling overwhelmed and exhausted. Supporting our most vulnerable children and young people can have a significant impact on your wellbeing, triggering your own stress responses and activating trauma.
Foster carers are the unsung heroes of our communities, but even heroes need a little extra support sometimes. I'm here to support you to nurture your own wellbeing, begin your journey of personal growth and development, develop a mighty mindset and navigate this journey with self-compassion and resilience.
As already parents to our biological children we naively thought we had the skills and know how to open our home and become foster parents! Little did we know this would open us to a world of parenthood that we had absolutely no clue about and no experience in!
We felt way out of our depth and very overwhelmed by the complex emotional needs that our foster children presented with and many times felt like we were failing horribly!! We had no clue how to “parent the children in front of us” and this is where Katrina comes in!
Katrina has worked closely with our family and equipped us as parents with the tools and knowledge to be the best that we can be for all of the children in our care including our own!
There has never been any judgement and she has always made us feel that we can do this!! Without her skills and knowledge and most importantly her support we would never have gotten where we’re at today and we will always be eternally grateful to her!!
Against all the odds our new family is now thriving and without Katrina our story would have had a very different ending!
