Every child deserves the opportunity to thrive in education—especially those who have faced adversity, trauma, instability, or unmet needs.
Children who are vulnerable, in need, or in care often experience complex challenges that affect their ability to engage fully in learning. These may include difficulties with emotional regulation, attachment, behaviour, or mental health. Their needs are often misunderstood, and their potential overlooked.
With over 20 years’ experience working across Behaviour Support, EOTAS, and trauma-informed education, I specialise in helping schools and professionals understand and respond to these needs with sensitivity, skill, and compassion.
Every family is unique—and sometimes, families need a little extra support.
Parents, kinship carers and foster parents may face challenges that feel overwhelming, especially when navigating complex family dynamics, trauma, or additional needs.
I work alongside statutory services to provide parenting support that is:
With over 20 years of experience supporting families in a variety of settings, I offer:
My goal is to empower parents and carers with the tools, understanding, and confidence they need to support the children in their care—building connection, improving outcomes, and creating stronger, more resilient families.
Experiencing trauma can profoundly affect a child’s sense of safety and belonging, their ability to form and maintain healthy relationships, and their capacity for emotional regulation and awareness.
Behaviour is the language of trauma. Children often show us—long before they tell us—that they are in distress. In response to overwhelming experiences, children and young people may develop deep mistrust of adults and display highly activated stress responses. These may present as risk-taking, avoidant, withdrawn, or ‘challenging’ behaviours in school—often misunderstood as defiance rather than distress.
Children communicating distress through behaviour may be struggling with significant and complex needs that affect not only their own wellbeing, but also the safety and emotional climate of the wider school community. For schools, navigating this unfamiliar and emotionally charged terrain can feel daunting and overwhelming. Educators are often left unsure of how best to respond, support, and safeguard the pupil while maintaining a safe and nurturing learning environment for all.

I offer consultancy and advocacy for Schools and Statutory Services (HSCNI) to ensure that the needs of children who are vulnerable or in care are being understood and met within education;

- navigating school and EA policies, processes and procedures including SEND and Statementing.
-timely information sharing between agencies and within schools which respects the agency of children and families
Multi-agency working can improve outcomes for children and young people who have experienced trauma or adverse childhood experiences. I can provide support by
- establishing (and coordinating) a multi agency Team Around the Child
- ensuring teams have shared goals, set high ambitions for pupils and give practitioners the space and the tools to support pupils educational outcomes.
- coordinating multi agency support planning, recording and monitoring interventions
- contributing to multi agency decision making that is in the best interest of the child
- timely information sharing between agencies and within schools which respects the agency of children and families.
Children in care and vulnerable pupils may communicate distress and demonstrate high levels of significant and substantive need by presenting with a range of behaviours that have impact on their safety and wellbeing and the safety and wellbeing of the wider school community - navigating this unfamiliar ground can feel very overwhelming for schools.
I offer
-impartial advice, support and training for practitioners to ensure they understand how having experienced trauma or adversity impacts on children’s ability to engage with education
- a solution focused approach to identifying, understanding supporting pupils needs and assisting school staff to implement evidence based reasonable adjustments, interventions and supports that promote the best interests of the child
-assistance to schools in the effective use of appropriate planning and assessment processes (including risk management and safety planning) to promote safeguarding, identify and prioritise presenting needs, document and evidence interventions, measure progress and record and report incidents or concerns.
- wraparound support for staff teams to build capacity and promote the wellbeing of staff and pupils and the wider school community
